The insurance market in the United States is one of the largest in the world, leading the industry with high premium volumes and employee numbers, as well as insurance company revenues. Insurance premiums written in the U.S. exceed one trillion U.S. dollars annually. MetLife is one of the largest global insurers and is headquartered in New York. In 2022, their total revenue from U.S. business operations amounted to almost 40 billion U.S. dollars at the time.

Leading insurers

Being the largest insurance market in the world, the U.S. is also home to many of the world’s leading insurance companies. In 2021, the U.S. insurance industry was led by Berkshire Hathaway, Prudential Financial, and MetLife in terms of total assets held by each company. Prudential Financial provides investment management and other financial products along with insurance services, while Berkshire Hathaway is a holding company with subsidiary companies that engage in freight rail transportation, energy generation and distribution, manufacturing, and retailing in addition to insurance.

Life & health insurance

Health insurance is an ever-present topic in the United States, especially since the introduction of Obamacare in 2010 which expanded coverage to previously uninsured Americans. Several types of health insurance exist in the United States – including varieties of private and public coverage. UnitedHealth Group Inc is the largest health insurance company by direct premiums written with a 15 percent market share. As of January 2024, the largest life insurance company in the U.S. was MetLife.
