Aviva Plc is a British multinational provider of general and life insurance, headquartered in London. The history of Aviva Plc. can be traced to the establishment of Hand in Hand Fire & Life Insurance Society in 1696, after the Great Fire of London. The modern insurance company was first created as CGNU through the merger of Norwich Union and CGU Plc. It was renamed Aviva in 2002. Aviva Plc ranked among the largest insurance companies worldwide in 2023. At the end of 2022, the total revenue of Aviva had reached over 16 billion British pounds.

Financial performance of Aviva plc

In 2022, the value of gross premiums written for Aviva in its general insurance segment in the UK and Ireland increased from the previous year, whereas the value of life insurance premiums dropped. Gross life insurance premiums written decreased by more than one billion British pounds, while gross general insurance premiums written increased to approximately 5.74 billion British pounds. At the same time, the combined value of Aviva’s premiums ceded to reinsurers from those segments reached over three billion British pounds. The income from Aviva’s gross written premiums fell slightly in 2022 compared to the previous year, dropping below 19 billion British pounds.

Aviva’s employee breakdown by gender

Aviva plc ranked third among leading insurance companies traded in the United Kingdom in 2022 based on the number of employees, beaten only by Marsh & McLennan and Old Mutual. In 2022, the yearly average number of people employed by Aviva worldwide stood at 22,060. Out of this number, approximately 8,700 were employed in the UK region in 2022. As of December 2022, approximately 52 percent of Aviva plc’s workforce were women, and approximately 48 percent were men. While these proportions are somewhat equivalent, the gender split of employees at Aviva plc becomes more pronounced for the group’s management positions. Among the 999 senior management positions at UK-based Aviva, only around 37 percent of them were held by women.
